  4. This file is a plain text file briefly describing WWIV Mac BBS 3.0,
  5. such that you can decide whether you wish to spend time downloading
  6. the rest of this package for use.
  7.  
  8. * WWIV Mac BBS 3.0 is a bulletin board system (BBS) for the Apple
  9.   Macintosh line of computers. It is based on a system developed for
  10.   the IBM PC (Copyright (c) 1986 Wayne Bell).
  11.  
  12. * It supports 300/1200/2400 baud, D.C. Hayes 100% compatible modems
  13.   and higher speed modems at 9600 and 19,200 baud (and other rates
  14.   can be supported) - the U.S. Robotics Courier HST 9600 baud modem
  15.   (which is Hayes compatible except at 9600 baud), and the Telebit
  16.   Traliblazer 19200 baud modem (which is Hayes compatible except at
  17.   9600, 19200 baud) are examples of these high speed modems (there are
  18.   no standards currently set for 9600 and 19200 baud modems - one
  19.   manufacturer's modem may not be compatible with another at these
  20.   higher speeds). Note the old Apple 1200 modem is not Hayes compatible.

  22. * It requires a minimum of 512K of RAM memory to operate (it runs on all
  23.   members of the Macintosh family), and a hard disk is recommended.
  24.   It is compatible with Switcher, MultiFinder, AppleShare, RAMDisks etc.
  25.   
  26. * The software is sold on a Shareware basis, and you are requested to
  27.   send the author a donation of $30 or more to the address below, if
  28.   you decide to use the program.
  29.   
  30. * The software may be freely distributed as long as the software is
  31.   distributed complete and unmodified, and no fee is charged for
  32.   distribution, other than any normal fee necessary for on-line charges,
  33.   or duplication of diskettes. Since the complete package is quite large,
  34.   should you wish, you may send a diskette to the address below rather
  35.   than spending time and money downloading the rest of the software.

  82.   Parts 3 and 4 are optional, but if you are a new user and don't want to use
  83.   ResEdit, it is suggested you get Part 3. If you want to write external
  84.   applications, you need Part 4.

  86.   The suggested arrangement of files on diskette are :
  87.   
  88.     + 800K HFS diskettes - Disk #1 : ReadMe, StuffIt, Stuffed Files #1 and #2
  89.                          - Disk #2 : Stuffed Files #3 and #4
  90.     + or 400K MFS diskettes - in total 3 diskettes will hold the complete archived
  91.                               system (over 1 Mb archived, over 1.7 Mb unarchived),
  92.                   if it is re-arranged, otherwise 4 diskettes are needed.

  95.   * Features of the BBS are :
  96.  
  97.   + Use of Macintosh User Interface for the System Operator (Sysop)
  98.     allows for flexibility in arranging window displays, and use of
  99.     Desk Accessories, Cut/Paste (limited to DA's) etc.
  100.     
  101.   + An unlimited number of users can be supported - passwords, security
  102.     checks add to the integrity of the BBS.
  103.     
  104.   + On-Line context sensitive help available at all times to users.
  105.   
  106.   + Users are assigned security levels, which determine the amount of
  107.     time on the systen, access to certain files etc. New users are 
  108.     limited in what they can do, until they are "validated".
  109.     
  110.   + Users connect to the BBS when calling, automatically at the correct
  111.     speed. A minimum and maximum baud rate can be specified that the BBS
  112.     can support.
  113.     
  114.   + Up to 19 Public message sections with built-in editor, fast scan of
  115.     new messages since last login, time compensation for message posting
  116.     given, etc are available. "Backspacing" in messages is allowed,
  117.     and messages can be left anonmously in a number of ways (there is
  118.     a special "Dear Abby" board).
  119.     
  120.   + Private EMail with auto-reply, receipt etc. Also ability to send
  121.     mail to multiple persons.
  122.   
  123.   + A voting section.
  124.   
  125.   + General text files can be made available for viewing by all users.

  127.   + The list of all users, and callers today are available to all users.

  133.   + Default user settings such as screen size, word wrap on/off,
  134.     one key/line mode of menu selection, message sections to be
  135.     scanned automatically, mail box open/closed, "spinning cursor",
  136.     pause at end of page of display on/off.

  138.   + A list of other BBS's is maintained, and can be added to by users.
  139.   
  140.   + Various system messages are displayed at appropriate places while
  141.     users are using the BBS - these are simple text files which can be
  142.     modified by the Sysop, and an Auto Message that can be modified by
  143.     users.

  145.   + Users can "chat" to the Sysop, and only when the Sysop wishes it.
  146.   
  147.   + Up to 19 Public file sections, and 1 private Sysop section are 
  148.     available for users to upload and download files to/from. Access
  149.     to these sections are controlled in the same way as message sections,
  150.     but an additional enforceable upload/download ratio (e.g. 1 Kb of
  151.     upload for every 10 Kb of download) is available. The BBS supports
  152.     XMODEM, XMODEM/CRC, MacBinary, ASCII, XMODEM with 1 Kb blocks, YMODEM
  153.     Batch file transfer protocols. This version supports MacBinary II.

  155.   + Options are available in the file sections similiar to those in
  156.     the message sections for scanning for new files, or for looking
  157.     for a particular file, based on its description (which the user
  158.     specifies when uploading). "Wildcard" filenames can be used.
  159.     
  160.   + Uploading compensation of 1 min of extra time on for each 25 Kb
  161.     uploaded is given.
  162.     
  163.   + When downloading, the approximate time needed, is displayed for the
  164.     user, and when uploading (MacBinary only), the approximate time
  165.     needed, is displayed for the Sysop. Complete control over the batch
  166.     when using YMODEM Batch is available, including automatic logoff when
  167.     finished.

  169.   + There are a number of Sysop commands available, for running the BBS
  170.     remotely.
  171.     
  172.   + A running log of users' actions is kept (today and yesterday).
  173.   
  174.   + The results of the voting can be surveyed.
  175.   
  176.   + A built-in text editor is available for changing system messages etc.
  177.   
  178.   + A "mini-DOS" is available for housekeeping chores.
  179.   
  180.   + A built-in "mini-terminal" program, with complete access to the
  181.     file sections, is available for Sysop's to call other BBS's.
  182.     A dialing directory and other features are available.
  183.     
  184.   + The BBS can be "closed" to new users, unless they know the correct
  185.     new user password.

  187.   + A display of all user activity appears on the Sysop screen, and
  188.     the Sysop and user can enter keystrokes from either keyboard at
  189.     any time. The Sysop can login "from the keyboard" as a normal
  190.     user (this is how the Sysop can easily "upload" files already
  191.     available on his disk, but not entered into the BBS).

  193.   + The BBS menus can be modified by the Sysop.
  194.   
  195.   + Third-party utilities available.
  196.   
  197.   + External applications can be written which become part of the BBS - 
  198.     allowing automatic execution when a user logs on; execution after being
  199.     chosen by the user from a menu; and automatic execution during a 
  200.     specified time period - such an application, called Tabby, will be
  201.     available from its author, Michael Connick, allowing connection to the
  202.     worldwise Fidonet™ network, including EchoMail™. Sample applications
  203.     and documentation is available to those who wish to develop their own - 
  204.     e.g. on-line games. Development is possible using HyperCard™.

  266.  Enhancements :

  268.   + Support for higher speed modems - specifically 19,200 to 57,600 baud.

  270.   + A flexible modem parameter configuration has been added - allowing better control
  271.     over modem commands sent to your modem at initialization, calling out, and
  272.     hangup etc. Sample configurations for popular modems are available.
  273.   
  274.   + Support for YMODEM batch file transfer protocol - downloads for users, and both
  275.     uploads and downloads for Sysops. The size of the batch can be specified, and
  276.     several sub-options exist.
  277.   
  278.   + Support for the Macintosh file naming conventions (i.e. any name up to the maximum
  279.     length allowed). However, it is optionally still possible to enforce MS-DOS naming
  280.     conventions if you wish. "Wild-card" names can be used for downloading etc. 
  281.     Lowercase Macintosh names are allowed.

  283.   + Enhancement when reading EMail - the original message is no longer automatically
  284.     deleted after leaving a reply.

  286.   + The file section upload/download ratio is now more flexible - allowing control
  287.     over the actual ratio, and control over individual users.

  289.   + In various places where the user's download security level can be changed, so
  290.     can their upload/download Kb.

  292.   + Additional parameters have been added, allowing you more control over the size
  293.     of serial port buffers etc.

  295.   + When uploading from the keyboard, a standard Macintosh File Dialog is now used,
  296.     and files can be moved/copied from anywhere to the appropriate file section

  299.   + When in the mini-terminal, a different file section prompt is displayed to avoid
  300.     confusion when calling other WWIV Mac BBS's.

  302.   + An additional method of restricting a user's time on the system has been 
  303.     implemented - they are either allowed some many calls per day, as before, or
  304.     so much time on per day.
  305.   
  306.   + Other enhancements in the file transfers - once an upload has started, if the file
  307.     will be too large to fit on disk, the upload will be aborted immediately. 
  308.     Other speedups have been made.
  309.   
  310.   + Support has been added for "external applications" - meaning third-party programs
  311.     and utilities can be made part of the BBS in a number of ways - automatic
  312.     execution when a user logs on, selection by the user from a menu, or automatic
  313.     execution during a specified time period. The intended use of the automatic
  314.     execution is support for the FidoNet™ network system in use throughout the world -
  315.     this is accomplished by a third-party application called Tabby being developed by
  316.     Michael Connick, which will be available separately shortly. Sample external
  317.     applications and documentation, including use of HyperCard™ are currently 
  318.     available.

  320.   + Added to, and changed logging of file transfers to Sysop's Log.
  321.    
  322.   + Added a check to the modem initialization code - if the modem doesn't respond
  323.     to the modem initialization string within approx. 1 minute, an error message will
  324.     be displayed on the Sysop's screen, and the BBS will then not appear to be stuck
  325.     in a loop - i.e. you can quit from the BBS, or simply switch your modem off/on and
  326.     recycle the BBS, or logon from keyboard etc.

  328.   + General improvements in the way the Macintosh user interface is handled,
  329.     especially when using MultiFinder.
  330.     
  331.   + FixDLoads utility enhanced to allow selection of specific file sections.
